Montagnard
About
A battle-scarred Navy SEAL. His loyal K9, Ajax. A blood feud born in the ashes of the Vietnam War. And a mother trapped in the criminal underworld of Ho Chi Minh City.
This is a first-page gut punch that never lets up.
The Prairies Book Review calls it “an absolute page-turner that action thriller lovers cannot afford to miss.”
Literary Titan praises its “intriguing characters in an exotic and dangerous location.”
Kirkus hails it as “a tightly focused and exciting second installment.”
This is high-stakes thriller storytelling done right.
Praise for this book
Wow! This is the first book I have read by this author, and I am hooked. [...] Author Gilbert himself is an Army veteran with decades of martial arts training, and this life experience is evident in his colorful descriptions of the action of US Navy SEAL JD Cordell, the bigger-than-life hero of this book. The book books back and forth between the Vietnam War, and present day, with a clear story of the persecution of the Montagnards, who generally fought alongside US Army Special Forces (Green Berets) against the communists VC and NVA, and then were left to suffer in re-education camps after the US left SouthEast Asia. [...] This book describes Special Operations action in Vietnam, and the Middle East, and Africa, over five decades. The combat actions are brutal, and entirely believable. I finished this book in three days, despite a busy day-job.
What will you like? [...] The action is incredible, the characters are amazing, the storyline is astonishing. It all feels so real, the men, the action, the times, the war. This is beautifully written and edited. The one thing that you will find is the astounding emotional impact that it will make on you. As you walk next to the men and K9 partners, every one of them that are risking their lives to rescue people. Darren takes us on this amazing journey across the globe to the war zones, and back again to the US. The lives of those men in the Seals and other special units that are required to do these astounding rescues are incredible. This is a remarkable read that should be in everyone’s library.
Montagnard is an action thriller by D.C. Gilbert. I miss stories like this. It gives me this unexplainable nostalgic feeling. I rarely read anything like this anymore and I’m glad I stumbled upon this great book. It reminds me of action films from when I was way much younger, so as I read this book, I was really imagining it as a movie. I love JD and Ajax’s tandem; it’s always adorable to have a hero lead in the story who loves his hero dog. I’m also glad the author included an epilogue about JD, Doctor Chang, and most especially, Sophie. Otherwise, I would’ve been crestfallen. I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.
